Giveaway: Max 'N Me Studio Doll

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. CONGRATULATIONS TO GLORIA!

I have something really cool for you today. This giveaway is sponsored by McNall of Etsy's Max 'N Me Studio. The winner will get to pick his or her choice of any $20 doll - either a wall hanging or a pin - in the shop!

All of the dolls in Max 'N Me Studio are mounted on reclaimed wood, and a wide variety of materials are used. On each piece, the wood is printed with a saying that helps describe the personality of the doll. Some of the dolls are sculptures meant to be hung on the wall, and some are wearable art: you can take off the doll and wear it as a pin! How awesome is that?!

From the shop profile:

"Max is a 7 yr old who lives with a form of autism called Aspergers. “me” is his mom.

"Two years ago Max didn’t show affection, or want to be touched. He also didn’t talk much, play with others, draw or color, respond nicely to questions, sleep through the night, use the toilet, drink from a cup, eat anything except ham, cheese and raspberry juice, ask for what he wanted or participate in outings without seemingly random raging temper tantrums.

"Through a series of events – no one thing that we can absolutely pin point – we successfully reached into his world and pulled him firmly through the fog of autism and the Max we enjoy today is an amazing, quirky, interesting, delightful fully functional member of society. He makes friends with kids he meets at the playground, he talks intelligently about his interests, he reads, writes, draws, eats vegetables, talks on the phone, sings, sleeps through the night, and hugs and snuggles with those he loves.

"Mostly our life is pretty typical now-a-days except when it comes to motivating him to learn. Max doesn’t cement concepts unless he can grasp why it’s important to HIM to learn.

"Max ‘N Me studio was born out of Max's desire to have his own money to buy Legos and my desire to teach him about money, reading, writing, drawing, and design while also celebrating his unusual way of looking at the world.

"Living with Aspergers has changed my life. It’s taught me to remain calm, accept the cards I dealt myself, think even farther outside the box, fight for the child I love and let others help me.

"A piece of my art was once published in a magazine and then a book. That's my 15 minutes of fame. Mostly I'm just a business woman, a hobby artist and most importantly a mom to Max and his 2 older brothers.

"For more information about Max ‘N Me - including our journey through autism please visit our website www.MaxNmeStudio.com

"10% of our profits are being set aside to be donated to art and autism programs."

Now that is something we can all get behind, right??

WIN IT!!
To win your choice of any $20 doll in Max 'N Me Studio, visit their shop and then comment back here with which doll you would pick if you won. (Be sure to show some ♥ while you're there!) It's that simple! This is required and must be done before any additional entries will count.

Giveaway: $50 Jafra Gift Certificate

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. CONGRATULATIONS, LISA KEENEY!

Here it is, the giveaway I promised when Fishing and Wishing reached 50 followers:

the winner will get to pick $50 of their choice of JAFRA products!

A little bit about JAFRA, since I know most of you probably won't have heard of it before:

JAFRA was founded over 50 years ago by Jan and Frank (Ja-Fra) Day, in California. JAFRA is a "party plan company with a multilevel compensation plan" (similar to many direct marketing companies where you have a party in peoples' homes, for instance). JAFRA sells high-quality skin care products and empowers women to earn financial independence on their own terms.

Their premiére product is Royal Jelly Milk Balm Moisture Lotion, for the face. Royal Jelly's rejuvenation properties are legendary. Offered in Jafra's Royal Jelly line are the milk balm, milk bath, body complex, vitamins, lift concentrate, and nutritional drink. If you visit the Royal Jelly page, you will see that these products come with a price. However, I can tell you from personal experience that they are absolutely worth every penny and, with the exception of the vitamins and drink, will last for months.

Personally, I, Melanie, have been involved with JAFRA since the Spring of 1999. I was working as a legal secretary in an estate-planning law firm, and my office manager was also a JAFRA Manager. She tried for months to get me interested in the products, but I was a loyal Mary Kay customer at the time. My then-best friend and her mother were MK consultants, and I liked their products. A lot. They had tried repeatedly to get me to sign on with them, but since I'm not really a "sales" kind of girl, I kept saying no.

And then I finally broke down and let my office manager schedule a one-on-one consultation with me to try JAFRA. Oh, my goodness, what an impression it made on me! My skin never felt more amazing; I could not stop rubbing my face after putting on the Royal Jelly Milk Balm (RJMB) and my elbows after trying the RJ Body Complex.

I tried a little of everything that day, and there was not one single thing that I didn't absolutely love. I went home with a catalog that night, to decide what I wanted to order. Imagine my manager's surprise when I showed up the next morning wanting to sign up as a Consultant for JAFRA! I did so that same day, so convinced was I of the value, quality, and effectiveness of these products, and I still use them more than 11 years later.

I love JAFRA and think that truly, it is the best skin out there for me - and maybe for you! One lucky winner will get to try JAFRA by selecting $50 of his or her choice of products.

Let's visit a few more of your options:

You have four choices in the JAFRA Dynamics Intelligent Skin Care line: Hydration for dryer skin, Balance for combo or "normal" skin, Control for oilier skin, and Calming for sensitive skin. There are further options for mature skin, some of which I am starting to add to my skin care regime. I didn't use them when I was starting out, at 22, but now that I am 33, I feel like it's time! I use Balance Dynamics, pictured above, and I love it. But then, I love almost everything JAFRA. There are many more skin care products available, many of which I use (eye treatment is a must, ladies!), so be sure and check them all out.

JAFRA offers a full range of nail care products. I have many of them and have used them since the beginning of my time with them. They are wonderful. (Full disclosure, though: I have tried L'Oréal nail polish recently and may like it just a tad bit more. It dries super-fast! But I don't paint my nails often anymore, and it's entirely possible that JAFRA has changed its formulation since the last time I had to buy more nail stuff from them. Which isn't to say they aren't great; they are, and I think you would be happy with them.)

In addition to skin care and nail color, JAFRA offers a full range of top-of-the-line, state-of-the-art cosmetics. You can ask my husband: I own practically all of it. I don't have a make-up bag; I have a make-up suitcase. Or three. Seriously, I love it. If you are a cosmetics queen, you will find something you love at Jafra.

JAFRA has many other product lines, including sun care (we use it), spa products (we use it), teen items, fragrances (we have some), and more. Make sure you look at everything when deciding how you'll spend your $50!

Perhaps the most well-known of JAFRA's many products, aside from its Royal Jelly line, are the other Royal lines. They now have Royal Almond (which has a huge fan base; I use it every day myself), Royal Ginger (love it!) and Royal Rose (not a fan of floral scents, so I don't use it). These products are delicious and will make you feel truly pampered.

When my children were babies, I was a big fan of the Tender Moments line. I mean, of course I still am, but they are much bigger now! I was a big believer in the benefits of baby massage, and after each bath with Tender Moments Baby Hair and Body Wash, I would give them a long, loving massage with Tender Moments Baby Massage Cream. It facilitated a real connection, a strong bond, between mother and child; I loved every moment of it, and I know they did, too. Plus, it smells great!

(There are products for toddlers and older children, and I've bought and liked them, but I don't use them too often out of sheer laziness!)

The men are not excluded! JAFRA offers advanced formulas for Men's Dynamic Skin Care as wella s for women. I introduced my husband to the men's products at the very beginning of our relationship, almost 10 years ago, and he still uses them faithfully. There was a bit of hand-holding at first - I remember having to leave post-it notes on the bathroom mirror about the order of application! - but he's good on his own now. Hee!
From Rob (the hubs): "It's got a pleasant scent that's not overpowering. It gets me clean. What else do you want me to say?" I love that guy.
BUY IT!!!
As I mentioned before, I'm technically a JAFRA Consultant, but I don't actively sell it. I am what they call a "wholesale buyer," meaning I'm just in it for the discount. I'll share that with you! If you're interested in trying Jafra for yourself, email me with what you'd like to order and mention this blog post. I will take 25% of your entire order (tax and shipping not included, or I'd go broke on this deal!). Want to re-order? Fine. Take off another 25%. It's all the same to me. I'm not in it to make money; I just want to share the excellence that is JAFRA.
WIN IT!!
To win your choice of $50 in products from Jafra, visit the website and then come back here and comment with what you would choose if you won. You can pick one $50 item or five $10 items; it's up to you. (If you want to pick MORE than $50 worth, then I will just take off $50 and discount the difference 25%.) This is required and must be done before any additional entries will count.
EXTRA ENTRIES!!
You can do any or all of the following for extra entries into this contest.
1. Blog about this post, linking back to both this post and JAFRA in your post.
2. Follow Fishing and Wishing on Twitter and tweet about this contest. Make sure to include "@FishingNWishing" in your tweet!
3. Follow this blog on Google Friend Connect (on the right sidebar). If you already follow, just leave me a separate comment saying so.
4. Friend Fishing and Wishing on Facebook. If we're already friends, just leave me a separate comment saying so.
5. Grab my NEW button (right sidebar) and post it on your blog.
That's it!!
This contest will end at 11:59 PM EST on July 14, 2010, when I will choose a winner at random. Please make sure I have some way to contact you, since a lot of you don't have your email address in your profile. Twitter/Etsy/Ravelry IDs are fine, as long as they work! The winner must respond within 36 hours of being notified by me.
Open to international winners! Woo-hoo!
JAFRA Cosmetics International is not sponsoring this post; I am. All opinions are my own. I have used these products for more than a decade and love them just as much now as I always have. I am proud to call myself a JAFRA representative. JAFRA has not compensated me in any way for this post.
Good luck!

Giveaway: Kombuchick's Kombucha Starter Kit

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. CONGRATULATIONS TO TREE!
I had never heard of kombucha before it was brought to my attention by Etsy seller Kombuchick. I had to go and do myself a little Wiki-research. (We all know that Wikipedia is the final authority on all subjects ever, right? ;))
I learned: Kombucha is a fermented tea that is often used for medicinal purposes. (Disclaimer: The medicinal claims vary and have not been supported by the FDA, so do your own research and come to your own conclusions.) The kombucha can be brewed at home by using tea and a "SCOBY," or Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast. Care must be taken to maintain the proper pH and cleanliness of all components of the brewery process, to avoid contamination. Make sure to read more about this process after you win, so you can take full advantage of everything Kombuchick is going to provide:
  • Starter solution and SCOBY
  • A satchel of homebrew tea blend, enough for a gallon-size set-up
  • 8 oz spiced organic cane sugar blend

  • The "Kombuchick Guide to Kombucha Homebrewery"

  • 2 unbleached coffee filters and a rubber band, for covering your set-up

  • a BOGO discount card, for your next sweetener blend purchase

  • 24/7 online homebrew support

Sounds great, right??

If you'd like to give the kombucha a try, please read below for the entry rules.

However, if you're hesitant about trying kombucha but would still like to participate in Kombuchick's giveaway, she is generously offering an alternative prize:

an ounce of loose "Midsummer's Musk" black and oolong tea, with herbs grown organically in Kombuchick's own garden.

WIN IT!!

To win either the kombucha homebrew starter kit or the Midsummer's Musk tea, please visit Kombuchick's Etsy shop and tell me what else in her shop interests you. (Be sure to ♥ her while you're there!) This is required and must be done before any additional entries will count.

Buttons?

Here are a few dumb questions for those of you who are familiar with Blogger:

How do I add a link underneath my button, so y'all can snag it for your own sites?

And how do I add your button here? I can't for the life of me figure that out!!!

Finally, if I'm not composing this with HTML and instead use the rich-text editor, why don't my line breaks show up in the post? Everything is all mashed together, even though I hit "enter" to separate things.

Thank ya kindly. ;)

Welcome

Hello, everyone!

Welcome to Fishing and Wishing, your source for "Not-so-fishy reviews." I was being kind of silly when I picked that name: My husband is really into fishing, and I was a marine biologist before meeting my husband and becoming a mom, so fish are really important in our lives. There are lots of fish around our house, and we still talk about them regularly... Also, I feel like a lot of times, PR blogs will review and give away anything and everything under the sun. You will not find that here. Here, on Fishing and Wishing, I will try to present a wide variety of goodies for you, but I won't just give away anything. It will be restricted to items and services that I feel are good for you, good for the planet, good for something. I will always provide my true and real opinion in my reviews. If I don't like something, I will absolutely say so in a review.

Anyway, please please please click the "follow" button over there on the right, and add me to your Reader. Check back frequently, because I plan to get things hopping around here!

Again, welcome, and thanks for joining me in this new venture.
