The Time Has Come...

Hey, all you fabulous guys and dolls, I have an announcement to make:

The time has come for me to take a break, probably a really *long* break, from Fishing and Wishing.

I have had a very serious family crisis developing over the past several weeks, and as I'm sure you have noticed, it has caused me to spend less time here on the blog. I haven't been posting as much or promoting the current giveaways anywhere near as much as I should.

Things are not going to improve anytime soon, and even more is being heaped onto my plate, now that my son is having some medical issues, and we are starting a new year of homeschooling tomorrow (well, today now).

I need to take this time now to focus on my family's needs.

I don't know when I will be back to posting new giveaways and promoting more lovely Etsy shops. I have had a great time this summer, bringing all kinds of fantastic prizes to you. It's been a lot of fun, and I hope you have enjoyed it as well.

For the three currently open giveaways, I will let them run their course and announce the winners on the ending dates shown on the right side. However, I will not be starting any new ones, until life gets a little less crazy.

I hope you will add Fishing and Wishing to your blog reader, if you haven't already - it won't take up any space if I don't post, but if I DO start posting new giveaways, you'll find out much more quickly that way.

(Sorry for the icky iPhone pic!) Amy offered to send me some goodies from her jewelry shop, Stellar Relics, for review purposes for this blog. It arrived in a cute little pink-bubble-wrapped package in extremely short order.

Stellar Relics is another shop with great branding, and this is the cute little packet inside the bubble wrap. Everything matched, from the packing to the business cards, and I just love that.

Amy had asked me what I would like from her shop, and I sent her a BUNCH of links, unable to narrow it down further. Imagine my surprise when I opened the packet to find that she had very generously sent me FIVE different pairs of earrings, out of my requests! I was beside myself, totally giddy. My absolute favorites are these Silver Tassel Disco Drops, which are suprisingly "fancy" and dressed-up, unlike what I expected. When I put them on, the hubs immediately told me that I needed to put on something nice to go with them. So I did, and they looked great! These earrings are FAB. I am loving them as much in my lobes as in the pictures from the shop.

These emerald briolettes will go perfectly, I think, with the shawlette that I just finished knitting myself. I can't wait to wear them together! My five-year-old, Sophia, tried them in her own ears. They looked beautiful on her, too, but she did manage to get one of the dangling stones loose from its setting. It didn't take me long or too much effort to fix it, though, so I was quite relieved. (Sophia is The Ruinator in this house!)

I picked this pair of emerald dangles to go with the same shawlette, in case the other pair didn't match. They both go well and are both stunning in person. Part of the reason I chopped my hair off recently (see profile pic) was to better show off all the purdy earrings I got from Stellar Relics. No lie; I'm totally serious!! (I'm a bit impulsive, lol...)

I was glad to see Amy had sent me these lime-colored nautilus earrings, too. Gotta represent the sea! Aren't they so cute? My oldest, Chloë wore these for a day, and they looked terrific on her, too.

These matryoshka dolls are suprisingly weighty, and they feel awesome in my ears. They are highly detailed, even on the reverse side. I love the dolls and was so pleased when these were sent to me. Love 'em!

All-in-all, I'm thrilled with everything Amy sent to me, and when I want something fun and funky to add to my jewelry collection, I will definitely be back to check out her well-stocked shop.

Giveaway and Review: $25 Gift Certificate to Distant Star Alpacas

This next giveaway is sponsored by Missy at the Etsy shop Distant Star Alpacas. The winner can be anywhere in the world!

Missy sent me about 9 different samples of yarns, both handspun and millspun, from her lovely troop of alpacas. This purple is the first (purple is notoriously difficult for me to photograph, but this color is actually pretty true) one. This yarn was hand-spun and hand-dyed from "first" or prime fiber donated by her alpaca, Titan.

Missy tells me:

"Fiber on alpacas is classified as:

1sts or prime – coming from the blanket area (around their mid-section),

2nds – fiber from their necks and upper legs, usually coarser and shorter

3rds or trash – all the rest, usually very short and/or has a lot of guard hair.

3rds and some 2nds are good for stuffing or birds nests and if anyone every wants some, they just need to pay the shipping."

I didn't have much of the first sample, so I searched Ravelry for a pattern for the small yardage I had to work with and found this cup cozy pattern. I knitted it right up in an hour or two, and it was a great pleasure to work with. I love this yarn. It's soft as can be, and both the texture and color are very consistent. The only thing is, with as much as I've been buying coffees lately, I wish I'd remember that I had this to use! ;)

Here are a few of the critters. Aren't they adorable? About them, Missy tells me: "We have 16 male alpacas, sort of the 'runts of their litters'. They are not really good enough for breeding stock, but they still have wonderful fiber. I am currently not interested in breeding alpacas because there seems to be quite a few breeders in our corner of the world and there is always going to be the few that just aren’t good enough to breed. So we decided to take those for now."

The next sample was more firsts, millspun, natural-color yarn from Buchanan. Unforunately, I was almost finished knitting up a sweet little preemie cap for my charity, CARE Package, out of this yarn, but I stuck it in my purse and it all slipped off the DPNs (double-pointed needles) I was using. Because of the family crises with which I've been dealing, I haven't had a chance to attempt to fix it or continue knitting any of the other lovely samples I've received, but looking at and handling them, I know it will be nothing short of wonderful to do so. I can heartily recommend Distant Star Alpacas yarn to you! I know that I will be back for more.

More of the samples I so generously received - each as delicious as the next!

I also received fibers (various rovings and batts) from Distant Star Alpacas. I have no experience with spinning, so I can't tell you much about these fellas except that they, too, are truly soft. I do want to learn to spin, though, and now I have my first samples to learn on!

For review purposes, Debra sent me two soaps from her shop, including this oatmeal spice spa soap that looks and feels amazing. I have been using it in the shower, and I use it when I bathe my kiddos, too. My husband refuses to use it, because he says it doesn't smell "manly" enough for him, but what does he know? I think if he used it, he would love it, too.

The soap is olive-oil based and vegan friendly. It is safe for sensitive skin, and since my older daughter and I both have sensitive skin, I can attest to that! It doesn't bother us at all and is, in fact, quite soothing.

Also, Debra sent me this citrus-scented sunburst soap from her shop, and I've been using it at the bathroom sink to wash my hands. It smells AWESOME! I'm a big fan of citrus scents, and this one really fills the bill.

After using my two soaps for the past month or so, I can heartily recommend them to you and am happy to present you with this excellent giveaway for a $15 gift certificate to LeeSpa Soap Shop. Depending on what you choose, you can pick up anywhere from 3-5 bars without going over that amount!

He was pleased with all the choices and at every single picture, he asked me "can you get that one? can you get that one?" so they are sure to delight the youngsters in your lives! I guess I might be a little obsessed with party favors right now - it's birthday season in our house once again! - but I think these jack-o-lantern soaps would be really fun in a Halloween party goody bag! It's even scented with pumpkin spice!

For review purposes for this blog, Dawn sent me a variety of cookies from her shop, Sweet and Sassy Goods. They arrived very quickly via Priority Mail and were nicely packaged in a large basket with tissue paper, ribbons, and cellophane wrap. The result was a lovely basket that would have made an excellent gift. My children were too excited to open it and see what was inside!

My son had asked for the Peanut Butter Gourmet Cookies, so we received a half-dozen of those. All of the cookies were individully wrapped, so they would have also made great party favors. The PB cookies were enormous! They had a delicious peanut butter flavor and large chocolate and peanut butter chips. Yum!

Unfortunately, most of the crayons and flowers were quite broken when we received them, although I did find two beautiful flowers that were not, so I would suggest additional packing be added to keep them safe during transit. The cookies were all fresh and looked delicious. They were meticulously decorated and very professionally done. None of my kids cared that they were broken, so that was fortunate! (Especially the youngest, who thinks that she gets two of something when it is actually broken in half!)

The hubs and I enjoyed the cookies, as well as the kids. We devoured the whole dozen in two days, in fact. They were a great 'present,' and we would happily recommend them to you and yours.

About her prints, Leslie tells me, "I create the photos by taking photographs of prints, designs or real life images and layer the pictures with an oil paint application. Then I continue to layer different filters on top until I'm happy with the end result. Christie sent me this gorgeous bowl to review for Fishing and Wishing. I loved it as soon as I laid eyes on it! It's absolutely beautiful and well-made. The colors are interesting and intriguing, and the shape is the same. We (my kids, who were with me when I picked it up from the Post Office, and I) immediately set to work thinking what I should keep in it. Of course, they thought up kid stuff, like crayons and fruit snacks, but that didn't exactly fly with Mom!

In the end, I chose to use it as a catch-all for some of my jewelry that hadn't found a home yet, and it's just perfect for that. It looks so pretty on my dresser, and I'm so thankful to have received it.

Little Grippers Crayons carries a wide variety of crayon shapes for your little ones' various needs. There are girl-specific crayons (where these garden ones are located, although I would submit that these could definitely be unisex!), boy-specific, and unisex crayons. You can see that they are very well-made, solid and with rich, deep colors. I don't see any bubbles or missing areas, and I would venture to guess that any sub-par crayons are removed and remade! Custom orders are also welcome.

I know two little girls in this house who would go ga-ga for these beautiful heart crayons! Of course, they would want them to be ALL pink and purple, because they are a bit silly like that.
